Census Regional Road Tour comes to Lansing with
“Be Counted” Message

WHO:

  • Lt. Gov. John Cherry, Chairman, Michigan Complete Count Committee
  • Virg Bernero, Mayor, City of Lansing
  • Rep. Mark Meadows (D), 69th District (East Lansing)
  • Kyle Caldwell, President and CEO, Michigan Nonprofit Association
  • Census Bureau Representative, Detroit Regional Office

WHAT: A news conference kicking off the 2010 Census Regional Road Tour in Lansing. The Lansing region will host the 2010 Census “Portrait of America” Regional Road Tour: an interactive, experience designed campaign to encourage participation in the 2010 Census by reaching out to historically hard-to-count communities.

WHEN: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2010

WHERE: First floor Rotunda, Capitol Building

WHY: It is estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau’s “American Community Survey” that more than 178,000 Michigan residents were missed in the 2000 Census due to seasonal migration and unreturned forms. For every 100 people not counted, a community risks losing an estimated $1.2 million over the next decade in federally funded programs alone. Michigan can’t afford to let anyone go uncounted.

The Michigan Nonprofit Association will join with community and state leaders to educate residents on the importance of participating in the 2010 Census, and encourage them to “Take 10 for 10” – take 10 minutes to answer 10 easy questions.

Parking for the media will be available on Capitol Ave in front of the Capitol Building.

Speakers will be available for one-on-one interviews with the media after the event.
